  • Summary

    Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, the Desktop Engineer position provides enterprising clients technical leadership in the architecture, design and implementation of desktop solutions and related technologies. You will be responsible for the Firm’s desktop computing environment, ensuring that the hardware and software is maintained to provide the best experience to all end users, as well as the management of all desktop and laptop systems, including PC standard image creation and maintenance, distribution of applications, virus and patch management, and participation and leadership in software evaluation and testing. You will also provide onsite technical support to firm attorneys and staff in the resolution of desktop application related issues and configure and build packages based on SCCM. The Desktop Engineer is also involved with extensive team and customer interaction, maintain positive contact with attorneys and support staff, and observe confidentiality of personnel and Firm matters.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Responsible for the design and implementation of solutions for client technologies (e.g.   Microsoft Windows 10, Office 2016, Adobe Acrobat, iManage DeskSite, Dell, Lenovo, HP, Apple hardware, etc.).
    • Serve as escalation support and provides onsite and remote (email, voice, chat and possible external visits) customer support for all network-based, computer-based, and mobile device-based applications and hardware offered by the firm or enabled by the firm, such as personal mobile devices and computers used to access firm resources.
    • Provide Level II support for all data center and desktop environments in a 24/7/365 environment.
    • Maintain configuration documents for every server and workstation device managed.
    • Develop detailed documentation on software configurations, deployment processes, packaging procedures, imaging process, test scripts and other desktop and application related documentation.
    • Enforce all procedures as they relate to technical change control and patch management and core systems monitoring for Firm desktops.
    • Maintain a multiple-site Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager infrastructure and develop custom SCCM reports.
    • Test new software, software upgrades, and create test scripts.
    • Develop and maintain end-user experience using tools not limited to Group Policy and Ivanti User Workspace Manager.
    • Use of firm ticketing system to process, update and resolve incoming service and change requests.
    • Work with the IT Security Manager to protect desktop and laptop systems from intentional or inadvertent harm, including virus, patch and physical security management.
    • Work to achieve a balance between system performance and stability and end-user convenience, ergonomics and usability.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

    • Mastery of computer networking, application interoperability and operating system concepts.

    • Knowledge of Active Directory, Azure, SQL, Hyper-V and PKI.

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in carrying out sensitive and time-critical projects.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical users.

    • Be a team-oriented person who can share information, goals, opportunities, successes and failures with the appropriate parties.

    • Thorough understanding of the sensitivity of the Firm’s data systems and information and the importance of fast, reliable, simple access to all of the Firms key systems.

    • Meticulous organizational skills.

    • Ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them in a timely manner.

    • Ability to work efficiently in fast-paced, high-pressured environment, performing well under deadlines.

    • Ability to think independently and apply good judgment.

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and/or Information Systems or equivalent experience required.

    • Minimum five years of IT experience focused on desktop management and legal applications management.

    • Law firm experience required.

    • Basic knowledge of PowerShell or similar scripting languages required.

    • Hands-on experience with Microsoft MDT and SCCM CB for OSD and reference image creation.

    • Knowledge of SCCM for the administration and creation of collections, applications, packages, advertisements, queries and reports.

    • Experience in working with patch management using SCCM/WSUS or similar third-party patch management tools.

    • Windows 10 and OS X experience required, Microsoft Office 2016 support experience preferred.

    • Strong working knowledge of other legal applications such as iManage, CarpeDiem, Elite, Workshare, etc. strongly preferred.

    • Project Management experience preferred.

    • Experience in application packaging with InstallShield or other similar tools.

    • Experience in desktop imaging, zero-touch desktop migration, USMT, ACT and ImageX.

    • Experience of supporting Windows 10/OS X operating systems on Dell, Lenovo, HP and Apple hardware.

    • Experience supporting virtual desktop environments including VMware and Microsoft Remote Desktop Services


    Working Conditions

    Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
