Summary

Proofreader with a minimum of 5 years experience at a law firm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Excellent customer service skills are required.
  • Cold reads (i.e., read a document without the benefit of a master for errors (typos, grammar, sense, etc.).
  • Must read handwritten, word-processed or printed documents against a mark-up or new master for accuracy of transcription, grammar, sense and typos.
  • Full reads.
  • Financial printer proofs – work off-site.
  • Defined terms index check.
  • Cross references check.
  • Manual redlining and blacklining.
  • Create PDFs using E-copy of proofing reading mark-ups.
  • Assist when needed in handling and monitoring incoming e-mail request.
  • Make certain that information regarding on-going jobs is passed on to the Proofing Coordinator for the following shift.
  • Must be able to work alone and in teams.
  • Follow up with requestor on additional proofreading questions or request.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite 2010 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio).
  • Must be resourceful.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Team player – must be able to work well with supervisors, other departments and attorneys.
  • Thorough knowledge of proofreading procedures (including all of the above).
  • Ability to work under time constraints.
  • Must be proficient in the use of the Black’s Law Dictionary and Citation books.
  • Must be familiar with current Bluebook formatting guidelines.
  • Must have complete knowledge of blacklining and cumulative blacklining.

Education and Experience

  • Four years college degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five years proofreading experience at a law firm.

Working Conditions

Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
